“Back of the Dragon 16”

The Back of the Dragon on Virginia Route 16 is one of the premier motorcycle rides in the Appalachian Mountains, delivering approximately 32 miles and 438 curves between Marion and Tazewell, Virginia. Twisting across three mountains in Southwest Virginia, this legendary stretch of two-lane pavement combines tight switchbacks, sweeping curves, steep climbs, sharp descents, and dramatic elevation changes that keep riders engaged from beginning to end.

As VA 16 climbs through the mountains, riders transition from shaded forests and narrow technical sections to open ridgelines with spectacular views across the surrounding Appalachian landscape. The constant changes in elevation, visibility, and corner style make the Back of the Dragon a ride that demands attention while rewarding riders with one incredible curve after another. Scenic overlooks provide opportunities to pull over, regroup, and take in the rugged beauty of Southwest Virginia.

The ride can be tackled from either direction, with Tazewell serving as the northern gateway and Marion as the southern gateway. Riding it both ways creates two completely different experiences, as climbs become descents and familiar corners take on an entirely different personality. Tazewell has also become a popular gathering point for motorcycle enthusiasts exploring the route and the surrounding mountain roads.

Whether you’re riding a Harley-Davidson, Indian, Gold Wing, BMW, sport bike, touring motorcycle, or adventure bike, the Back of the Dragon VA 16 belongs on your motorcycle bucket list. Come for the 438 curves, stay for the mountain scenery, and leave with a ride you’ll be talking about long after the kickstand goes down. In the heart of Southwest Virginia, the Dragon is waiting—32 miles of mountains, curves, and pure Appalachian motorcycle riding.
